Especially retired racers won’t mind wearing a coat as they are used to wearing them from their time as a racer. Before and after a race they were probably often wearing one in order to keep the muscles warm and prevent injuries. See our other post on the issue if a Greyhound needs a coat against the cold.

1. Your Greyhound might appreciate an additional layer against the wet and the cold.

A wet dog will cool off much faster than a dry one. Just add some wind and your Grey might get cold really quickly.

If they are not running or playing but walking slowly e.g. on the leash or even standing and waiting for you to finish your chat with another dog owner, they might get cold fairly quickly.

Many Greyhounds lose fur once they move into a heated house. Penny (on the right) for example used to be living in a Greyhound kennel in Ireland. In Ireland it’s not very hot in the summer but also not too cold in the winter.

So when she moved in with us and experienced temperatures around 35°C / 95F for the first time, she lost quite a lot of fur, especially on the thighs but also on her belly. This might also be due to the temperatures in the house never dropping very deep at nights, which might have been different in the kennel, where she also maybe spent more time outside.
As a result she’s rather sensitive to cold wind, especially if she’s wet from rain. So we made sure to get her a pretty and colorful raincoat, which she wears proudly!

Penny, like most Greyhounds, doesn’t mind wearing a coat. As a former racer, she’s used to coats.

2. You might appreciate having a dog that’s NOT wet around the house.

Although Greyhounds are not as smelly as many other dog breeds, they start emitting their scent once they get wet. As they might stay wet and smelly for quite some time you can do yourself a favor by keeping them from getting wet in the first place.

Our two Greyhounds really enjoy being rubbed down with a towel when they got wet. But all rubbing will most likely not dry them all the way. So they will suddenly start to smell, something that we are just not used to, as they have so little smell if their fur is dry.

So we put a raincoat on if it’s raining really strong outside, in order to keep them from being soaked and maybe cold. But if we forget to put one on or get surprised by rain, we know that it won’t really harm them especially if it’s not cold outside.
